Background: Maersk Line and Sea-Land Service became Port customers in the Spring of 1985. In December 1999, AP Moller-Maersk acquired the international component of Sea-Land from CSX and renamed the combined container operation Maersk Sealand. In December 2002, APM Terminals was formed as a sister company to Maersk Sealand focused on worldwide terminal operations and based at The Hague with North American operations based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. APM Terminals operates 12 terminals in North America. Vessels operated by Horizon Lines, a domestic container carrier serving Alaska, Hawaii and Guam, also call at APM Terminals in Tacoma.
